STYLE Edit: Celines chic new Triomphe Minaudiere and Teckel handbags unmistakably evoke French gi

Has Celine creative director Hedi Slimane gone sentimental on us? What started as a rock ‘n’ roll tenure with Parisian girls and boys strutting their black leather on a catwalk-cum-nightclub has since evolved into collections of medieval knights, libertine poets and a millennial Bambi in grand 17th century grounds.

Celine’s autumn/winter 2021 collection for women, titled Parade, was showed off at the Chateau de Vaux-Le-Vicomte, and ended with the romantic image of a teary-eyed model in a glittery skirt, and by her side, Bambi all grown up.

This final, starlit image of the Parade reminds us of a quote by Charles Baudelaire, found in the show notes, courtesy of creative director Slimane:

“My youth has been nothing but a tenebrous storm, pierced now and then by rays of brilliant sunshine.”

The world is indeed opening up again after two long stormy years, and the “interrupted youth” Slimane references in the collection might finally be able to wear the pleated silk skirts, sheer embroidered dresses or the new Triomphe handbag for a night on the town.

Not that they couldn’t wear these pieces during lockdown, of course. As the Parade showed, there is something effortlessly cool about French girl fashion where one can deftly pair a pleated floral-printed midi skirt with a baseball cap and bomber jacket, and make it suit every occasion. The collection was wrought with these seemingly counterintuitive outfits – sparkly skirts met military jackets, tweed met bootleg jeans, asymmetric crop-tops met grandad’s old blazer. And yet, one could imagine the hippest Gen Z influencer confidently wearing the outfits absolutely anywhere.

Punctuating these looks were the new Triomphe handbag, Triomphe Minaudiere, Teckel and Strap Box, released this winter and poised to be French girl fashion staples – especially for fans of the mini bag.

Why K-pop idols like Blackpink are the new faces of global luxury

The winter season notably marks the debut of the Celine Teckel, a new round shaped east-west bag that comes in shiny Palmetto leather. The Teckel is available in contrasting shades – black and white – as well as the iconic Triomphe canvas, each featured with a supple trimmed leather shoulder strap and top handle.

For something a little more itty bitty, the Triomphe Minaudiere is one of the new additions to the Celine evening bag collection, with a refined metallic Triomphe frame and debuting in smooth calfskin and lizard skin premium leathers. Slimane styled the latter with a strapless black dress and light neck scarf. For a little grunge, a pair of Margaret Chelsea boots in calfskin completed the look. In another styling, an oversized chequered flannel coat was juxtaposed with the calfskin miniaturised Triomphe.

In addition to the Triomphe Minaudiere, Celine also introduced the new Strap Box. It features a similarly structural boxy shape, and is made in smooth calfskin or an exclusive crocodile leather. Like the Minaudiere, which has a delicate and very practical leather handle, the Strap Box has an adorable wrist strap that makes it oh-so-convenient for hand carry.
